Developing a Monitoring and Evaluation System for climate change adaptation in agriculture
On 5 July 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (MARD) Planning Department and the GIZ “Support to Viet Nam for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement” (SIPA) project jointly held a consultation workshop to develop a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system for climate change adaptation in the agriculture sector. The workshop, held at the Centre for Informatics and Statistics, brought together representatives from MARD, MONRE, as well as NGOs, agencies, and other stakeholders.
Participants at the workshop took part in discussions and provided feedback on three key topics: (i) Assessment of the current status of MARD’s M&E system for climate change adaptation; (ii) Proposed indicators for adaptation M&E in agriculture and rural development; and (iii) Data collection and solutions for applying information technology, data science, and artificial intelligence. The importance of digital transformation was also highlighted and advanced technologies for climate change adaptation monitoring and evaluation, such as data mining, machine learning, and big-data featured heavily during the discussions.
Concluding the workshop, representatives from the Planning Department and the SIPA project agreed that the comments and feedback would help to ensure the feasibility of a digital adaptation M&E system for the agriculture sector. This is one of SIPA’s activities supporting MARD to monitor and evaluate adaptation activities in the agriculture sector aimed at achieving the targets of the updated National Determined Contribution (NDC).
