New E-Learning Course on Nature-Based Solutions in Vietnamese
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) leverage ecosystems and biodiversity to address challenges like water and food security, human health, disaster risk management, and climate change. By protecting natural habitats such as forests, wetlands, and marine areas, NbS not only enhance biodiversity but also fosters community engagement, strengthening networks and knowledge for sustainable development.

The self-paced e-learning course “Nature-based Solutions: From Planning to Successful Governance and Implementation” was developed and is available for free on the Moodle-based atingi platform. The course supports capacity-building efforts in line with the IUCN NbS Global Standard and is now available in Vietnamese language, including case studies from Viet Nam. The Vietnamese version was created by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, WWF and others (Vietnamese Version: “Khóa: Giải pháp dựa vào thiên nhiên: Từ hoạch định cho đến quản trị và triển khai thành công | atingi”).

This course aims to leverage the potential of NbS for a varied group of professionals and changemakers in the fields of environment, climate, and development, including:
- Public sector representatives working on climate change or biodiversity or relevant sectors (e.g. water, agricultural, tourism or financial sector)
- Development cooperation professionals worldwide
- Representatives of private sectors and international organisations
- Students and young professionals interested in NbS

This course equips learners with essential knowledge on planning, implementing, governing, and monitoring NbS actions. It features six comprehensive modules and three real-world case studies showcasing impactful NbS initiatives in Viet Nam:
- Governance: Introduction to Site-level assessment of governance and equity (SAGE) methodology for assessing the governance and equity measures at Dakrong Nature Reserve in Quang Tri province under the Project on Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Vietnam (VFBC) funded by USAID, in collaboration with the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, WWF – Vietnam (Link).
- Financing: Explore how NbS financing is applied in shrimp sector and mangrove conservation Ca Mau province under the project “Mangroves and Markets: Scaling up Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Mekong Delta” implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), funded by German Ministry for the Environment (BMUB) in partnership with provincial governments of Ca Mau (implementing unit), Ben Tre, and Tra Vinh (Link).
- Mainstreaming: Learn how Quang Binh province integrated Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures into its Climate Change Response and Action Plan (2021–2030, vision to 2050). These practices are under the framework of the project, “Support to Viet Nam for the implementation of the Paris Agreement” (VN-SIPA) funded through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Department of Climate Change belonging to the Ministry of Nature Resource and Environment, and other stakeholders (Link).
By completing the course, particpants will get a deeper understanding of the NbS concept, be aware of its key challenges and opportunities, gain an overview of essential aspects such as mainstreaming, governance, financing, monitoring, and communication, and know real-world examples to reflect on their strengths and shortcomings.
